CALCULATION AND ANALYSIS

CFD simulation / Fluid mechanics

Computational Fluid Dynamics: Digital twins

Are you one of the many thousands of companies that develop and produce new products every day? Then you also know that tests and prototypes are necessary to ensure that the quality, functionality and efficiency of the new product is top notch.

Testing and prototyping are costly activities and in our competitive society there isn't always time to facilitate them. But CFD calculations and analyzes make it possible to minimize the number of prototypes and tests plus at the same time maximize product performance.

Optimizing electronics cooling

The video above shows the cooling system in a cabinet. To show the process and how we approach a CFD simulation project, we have made a simple case study, where we look into the possible positive effects of Computional Fluid Dynamics in relation to electronics cooling - take a look at the case study and video here.

How can CFD add value to your business?

CFD is a tool that can provide important insights for you who work with liquid and gas flows – for example in the form of ventilation systems, pipe systems or the production of electronics. As you know, it is difficult to predict the future - but it is actually possible with CFD, which gives concrete answers to how your product will behave.

CFD saves you time and money that would otherwise be spent on tests, prototypes and laboratory experiments. The development phase can be significantly shortened because it takes place via the computer and not in the form of physical prototypes. It is also easy to test how the product will react under different conditions and situations. By carrying out simulations of the product, you also minimize the risk of errors and breakdowns, as it is possible to identify and correct them using CFD.

In order to get the full benefit, however, the tool needs to be involved early in the process. This makes it possible to evaluate the design continuously, and you can manage to implement any changes as well as manage to correct critical parameters. However, this should not prevent you from using CFD on your current project, as CFD can provide value throughout the development process. Once you have gone through the CFD simulations, you are ready to launch the product. The advantage is that you have greater prerequisites for knowing how it will react and behave.

What is CFD?

CFD is an abbreviation for Computational Fluid Dynamic. It is a method within Fluid Mechanics where computer calculations are used to investigate gas and liquid flows. The calculations are complex, but at the same time also extremely effective in determining flow- and thermodynamic-related phenomena.

Among other things, CFD can be used to calculate and simulate:

  • Air resistance
  • Flow velocities
  • Pressure loss
  • Heat transmission
  • Mixing and separation processes
  • Thermal heat transfer
  • Chemical reactions

These calculations and simulations provide a unique insight into the product's flow conditions, which would otherwise have required expensive measuring equipment, expensive prototypes, time-consuming tests and subsequent data processing. CFD simulations cannot stand 100% alone, and prototypes and tests cannot be avoided, but with the help of CFD, they can be minimized.

Simcenter STAR-CCM+

Kirkholm uses Simcenter STAR-CCM+ as CFD software, because it is an excellent platform for making very complex simulations. Furthermore, it streamlines the path from CAD model to simulation result, as well as the possibilities for automation of design optimization directly in the CFD software.

It is especially the possibilities for simulations with moving objects, multiphase flow and particle flow that made us choose Simcenter STAR-CCM+.

Kirkholm can help you with CFD simulation

Kirkholm offer all kinds of calculations, analyses and simulations within CFD simulation and have a team of CFD experts, who are trained and experienced in the field. We can help you carry out the calculations, analyzes and simulations that your particular project needs.
