There is an increasing focus on environmental impact - also when it comes to shipping. This means, among other things, that the shipping companies face stricter regulations to ensure that shipping becomes cleaner and safer. The United Nations Maritime Organization (IMO) is behind the requirements, and all major ships must be able to provide valid documentation to enforce them.

Danfoss IXA develops systems and sensors with a focus on energy optimization and measurement of exhaust gases for the maritime industry. With their newly developed "Marine Emission Sensor MES 1001", the ships can measure the content of the harmful gases NOx, SO2 and NH3 in the exhaust. In this way, you always have the opportunity to make the necessary environmental documentation.

VISUALIZATIONS CREATE UNDERSTANDING AND ATTENTION

This is a complex challenge that shipping companies face, and it is also a technically complicated product that Danfoss IXA presents as part of the solution. To make both challenge and product more palatable, Danfoss IXA has used Kirkholm's competencies in technical illustration to make animated films. "Animating" means "giving life", and that is exactly what animations do. With vivid imagery rather than, for example, long technical texts, it is easier to penetrate with its message.

Kirkholm has designed two films for Danfoss IXA. One explains how the emission sensor itself works and is used. Here you can get very close to the product, where animated details are visible - details that can not be immediately seen on the physical product. The second film explains about different sensor applications and shows how the product can create value for the customer. CTO at Danfoss IXA Allan Skouboe is in no doubt about the effect of the films:

- Our new sensor product is unique in the maritime market, and the marketplace is also new. Therefore, we needed to communicate the operation and application of the sensor in an easy-to-understand way to our future customers. We decided to make two videos that we could use for customer visits and conferences. The videos have been used on various occasions around the world, and the effect is unmistakable: people who watch them are very impressed and immediately understand the message we want to convey, he explains.

COMPETENT PARTNER WITH TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE

To design the films, Danfoss IXA emphasized the need for a partner with a high level of technical understanding.

- The choice fell on Kirkholm, as we needed a partner who understood technically complex products. We have been very satisfied with the collaboration, and Kirkholm has been able to solve the task in a very competent way within a tight time frame, says Allan Skouboe.

The benefits of using animated movies are many. It is possible to ensure a targeted and unambiguous communication and create a universe where the individual narrative is at the center. With its dynamic form, animated films manage not only to explain - but also to retain the recipient. Another strength is that the films can be used on a wide number of platforms - for example on the iPad for sales presentations, on big screens for trade fairs, on Youtube and other social media.

The sensor is based on an optical measuring principle, which is called DOAS (Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy) and can i.a. used to document ships' emissions of harmful substances. Watch both animated films here.
